PRO Vs AMATEUR Graphic Design (Master This)
i often read comments on my channel about how to become a better designer or how to succeed in this industry although there are many different factors to becoming a superhuman master level designer and spoiler alert i'm not quite there yet myself there is one thing that if you understand the master your designs will be elevated to new heights now can you guess what that one thing is what should you be mastering now this video is not a trick and it's not some kind of click bait because mastering this one side of design truly made me understand how to design more efficiently and it gave me more clients in the long run now i am of course referring to the principles of graphic design these are the fundamental basics that you need to not only be aware of and not only should you understand them but you really should master them and consider them every single time you're working on a design so follow along with today's video and learn why that's the case and do yourself a favor by truly understanding and embracing the fundamentals of design so very briefly what are the design principles there is no set in stone number of how many principles there are but here are 12 that often come up when talking about this topic so we have balance in graphic design we have contrast hierarchy which is one of my most widely used principles we have emphasis proximity repetition rhythm white space pattern movement alignment and unity there are a few secondary principles as well and these include things like typography and color now these should be the building blocks to any of your design projects i know they're not just some random theory they actually do work and if you fully understand them they will truly enhance your design solutions in more efficiency now it is entirely possible to create a good design without even thinking about the design principles however this is typically done by a designer's intuition and it's going to require a lot of trial and error in order to create something actually looks good and creates an optimum end result for the user trial and error should not be desirable to any designer because it's opposed to having a solid and tried and tested method which means that having design principles sprinkled into your design process removes any kind of trial and error trial and error just wastes your time and that means less clients in the long run and so trial and error doesn't guarantee you a positive final design solution you want something that is concrete and sustainable but how do you actually go about using these design principles it does of course depend on what project you're working on now it might be a magazine layout design or maybe it's a giant billboard you might even be working on a logo but whatever you are designing you at least need some of these principles incorporated into your design process you can think of them like unwritten laws on how to structure your design so let's take a look at some quick examples so the bbc logo is seen here and what principles can you actually notice that are in play with this design well firstly we have three squares repeated along the logo so there's a degree of repetition now repetition is a great way to reinforce an idea it's also a great way to unify design and it brings everything together with all of the design elements the bbc logo also incorporates balance in the form of symmetrical balance now balance is a kind of type of design that is formed along the vertical axis and also the horizontal axis and this is where the weight of the elements is evenly divided into both sides of the layout balance gives the design its form and stability and it helps to distribute the elements evenly throughout the entire artwork now let's take a look at this nike advert campaign what kind of principles do you see at work right here now right off the bat we have contrast being used in the nike logo itself because it's the only part of the design that is not black white or gray this creates a focal point for the viewer and it also draws them into the design it also gives some brand recognition to nike itself the typography also utilizes contrast with the first two words being white and then the final word being in black this again creates some interest for the design we also have some asymmetrical balance because to the right of the design you have everything filled up in a large space in terms of the imagery and then to the left we have some negative space with a smallish kind of group of typography and this could actually also fall into the principle of proximity now there's also a nice degree of movement being used as you can see that her leg is guiding the viewer's eye towards the nike logo and also the text and then you have her arm along with the tennis racket moving across down to the bottom right of the design movement just leads the viewer's eye around the design there is a whole lot more going on in this design by nike but i would like you just to understand how skillful and professional designers do not fluke their way into a successful career they do consider every single element and relate things back to these very fundamental design principles if you're not thinking about the design principles every time you actually work on something then you are selling yourself short this video is a friendly reminder that you need to be actively incorporating the design principles into your work now i'm going to leave some helpful resources and links down in the description box of today's video i cannot of course make one video on all of the design principles because that would probably take about two months to edit and work on but if you would like to see a series where i run through each of the principles in a single video do let me know with a comment down below and there's actually a video on screen now that relates back to one of those principles so give it a click if you want to learn some more and until next time design your future today [Music] peace [Music] goodness
